For a short power cut, is it enough to put the dish’s supply on a battery? I’m trying to work out what needs to stay running for the laptop to remain online.

List every powered part in the path: dish supply, main router, any switch and any mesh node your laptop relies on. A running dish won’t help if the indoor equipment has lost power.

I hadn’t included the little switch. The laptop is on its own battery, so I thought I had covered it.

That’s why a planned test is useful. Check the backup device’s ratings and instructions, then verify the entire connection during an intentional switchover. Write down what actually stayed online and for how long.
